How to Check a Photographer's References

Most freelance or aspiring models don't have a manager or agency to set them up with reliable and legit paid modeling gigs. When you're looking out for yourself, it's important to check references. Here's how...
• Step 1
If you contacted (or were contacted by) the photographer in question through a networking site, he or she probably has a list of other members he or she has worked with readily available. Send messages to a few of the recent candidates, saying that you're thinking of working with the photographer and you'd like to know how the shoot went. Some may not reply, but some will give you a reference. Ask politely, and make sure you designate which photographer you're talking about.
• Step 2
If you found a casting call through another source, such as a classified ad, get the full name and working name (if different) of the person you're dealing with. If the photographer won't tell you his or her full name, it's a BAD sign. It's ok to ask for references directly, but be warned that someone who knows you're checking up on them will only send you to people who will say good things. Someone who refuses to give you references should be considered highly suspect.
• Step 3
Once you have the working or legal name of your intended photographer, do some research. With common names you might have to do a little digging, but try web searches for the name+"photography" and search the name on model networking sites, myspace, facebook, etc. If you can't find ANYTHING on the person, it might not be the name they usually use, or they might be brand new.
• Step 4
If you're not sure about a photographer, or some of the models he or she has worked with recommend it, tell the photographer you'd like to bring an (unobtrusive!) escort. If you couldn't find any references, and s/he won't let you bring an escort, turn the shoot down. It's not worth the risk! |
